The demographic ageing of developed countries results from the combination of two dynamics: the continuous increase in life expectancy and the persistent fall in fertility below replacement level. In the European Union, the share of those aged 65 and over rose from around 14% of the population in 1990 to 21% in 2022, while the share of those under 15 declined over the same period. This twin movement profoundly alters the need for public services: health, long-term care, pensions, adapted housing. The social-protection models inherited from Esping-Andersen's typology (1990) (liberal, conservative-corporatist and social-democratic) respond to these challenges in contrasting ways: the first favours means-tested benefits, the second employment-linked insurance, the third universal services funded by taxation. None of these models is fully shielded from the budgetary tensions linked to ageing, but they do not respond to them with the same intergenerational fairness.

Which of the following statements is correct?

Answer key : B

Text: "In the European Union, the share of those aged 65 and over rose from around 14% of the population in 1990 to 21% in 2022, while the share of those under 15 declined over the same period".

A. Contradicts the passage: the models do not respond to ageing-related tensions "with the same intergenerational fairness".

B. Text: "In the European Union, the share of those aged 65 and over rose from around 14% of the population in 1990 to 21% in 2022, while the share of those under 15 declined over the same period".

C. Contradicts the passage: ageing results from "the combination of two dynamics: the continuous increase in life expectancy and the persistent fall in fertility", not fertility alone.

D. Contradicts the passage: the third model named is "social-democratic", not a "universalist-Anglo-Saxon" model.

How Erudiam prepares you

  1. Parameters aligned with the notice: every mock exam uses the official durations, pass scores and weightings of the competition, including the combined pass scores.

  2. Spaced repetition (FSRS): it focuses your revision on what you get wrong, test by test, in step with the actual test timetable.

  3. The readiness index (ERI): it tells you whether you are ready, instead of giving you a meaningless overall average.
